自古以來，西藏便是個獨立的國度，1949年中國人民解放軍首次進入西藏，並於1951年5月脅迫達賴喇嘛簽下「十七條協定」，強迫西藏承認作為中國的一部份。1959年3月10日上午10：30，中國以武力攻打布達拉宮，西藏人民即發起大規模抗議行動，中國軍方的武力鎮壓造成拉薩地區至少八萬七千名西藏人死亡，這即是史上所稱的「西藏抗暴事件」。隨後，達賴喇嘛因此離開西藏，流亡至印度達姆薩拉，並繼續領導西藏流亡政府。自中國武力佔領西藏以來，已造成至少一百二十萬西藏人民死亡、六萬多個寺廟遭到破壞，迄今仍有一千多個政治犯受到囚禁，包括全球最年輕的政治犯班禪喇嘛。西藏人民長期生活在中國政府的高壓統治底下，言論與信仰自由受到極大的限制，宗教領袖與異議人士陸續被捕入獄，寺廟、文化傳統遭到破壞，自然生態與資源亦受到嚴重的破壞與剝削。每年3月10日，流亡各國的西藏人紛紛舉行示威遊行、絕食抗議等活動，紀念「西藏抗暴事件」
